Sápmi – Lule Sami Area
Sápmi – Lule Sami Area
“We Sámi are one people and country borders will not split our people’s fellowship.”
The 13th Nordic Sámi Congress 1986
We have our own Sami language and our distinctive cultural features – but we are also a part of a larger cultural community: Sápmi – the land of the Samis.
Our area is called the Lule Sami language area. It stretches from the Bottenviken in east to the Vestfjorden in west. In Sweden, most of us live in the municipalities of Jokkmokk and Gällivare. In Norway, most of us live in the municipality of Tysfjord / Hamarøy.
